Here's the cover for WW#5. You don't see this on the Wildstorm site because it wasn't finished in time for solicitations (when they announce a comic book usually four months before it goes to print). I had the bare bones meat of the image done but none of the background and nitty gritty detail of the actual figure. Again, this is a full computer painting, done in Photoshop except for the fairy sparkles done in Painter...
For the fans this is a beast. It is usually a criminal vampire that lives its entire life in beast mode. It is forced into the bestial state by the psi-powers of a BeastMaster. It is controlled by him at all times, so he must stay near a Beast. Powerful BeastMasters, ones that hail from Royal Vampire Bloodlines are said to be able to control many Beast at once. These Beast are the Shocktroops of the Vampire Nation. They are the enforcers of the Nations laws. Notice the metallic armbands and oversized metallic boots the Beast always wear, these are safety mechanisms. Should a BeastMaster loose control of his charge or suddenly die these metallic bands activate powerful magnets that lock the Beast's arms and legs together rendering him immobile...so yes, this cover signifies the Vampire Nations return to Wetworks...

What can I say, sweet. Can't wait to get it.
Cover looks excellent. I was very pleased with issue #4 also. I really liked Danes hooded battlesuit.
Wetworks seems to be doing well....I buy two of every issue myself. But Im surprised its not doing better. Casual comic fans seem to be more interested in power stunts. I agree with you Whilce, that a character being too powerful makes them boring.....thats why I love characters like Dane and have no interest in characters of the Superman archetype. Maybe having Dane bench press a dump truck and toss it on somebody may sell more books...? People really seem to be drawn in by raw strength feats. Just a suggestion, because I'd hate to see Wetworks get cancelled... but I think conceptually and artisticly Wetworks is second to none. Ive never been this interested in a graphic novel.
WoW!!! Whilce, this is my favorite cover so far. It also brings back memories to the early wetwork days when they were facing the Vampire nation.
Thanks for providing things like this for your fans.

Pretty cool job ya did. I wonder if one day you'll do a fully painted book digitally.
since as you stated that the vamnpire nation's eventual return when will Grail return to the team i can't stand this long wait ^_^ finally i found the grail action figure i have been searching for it for 3 years and finally found the "Assassin One" version so please i beg you guys make joel alonday a part of the team again please, please, please, please, PLEASE!!!!!!! ^_^
Woowwww! Great artwork. Saludo ako!
galing mo talaga whilce! I wish you could draw at Marvel and make variant covers for the Civil War. astig!
Wetworks vol.2 is just amazing. its kinda dark but still goes with the story and characters. This cover is just a WOW. But I believe it might boost the sales if it had 1 or 2 more former members especially Grail. It could bring back the old fans of wetworks and create a new. I know this sounds impossible coz you guys already made up the story but since it still is ongoing, why not think about my suggestion. I loved the old team but having "ab-death" and "ashes" is cooler. Shud have had them before... anyways keep up the GREAT work! Its just amazing artwork. Hope to see other people catch WETWORKS vibe.
Grail was an overrated character IMO. All the other characters were allowed to be what they were because of all the sacrifices Dane made to be the perfect leader. If Dane had the luxury of being in his position he'd be in the mold of a Wolverine type character...as he was in his team 7 days. Nothing against Grail...but i just think he overshadowed characters who had more to offer at times.
Whilce, loved the latest issue and the 'night tribes', this seems the way things should have gone with the original series, I love the mix of genre. Keep up the great work.

I am sure I will get roasted for this, but I feel this cover is not one of your best. Maybe it is a bit of the character design & a little too much color? The toned down version on the right in the three smaller images seems pretty good.
Now I did see the cover or some kind of promotional art for issue 8 which is phenomenal. Your work on Batman confidential has been extremely tight and solid.
Anyway who am I to judge. I am a big fan of your work and am glad Wetworks is back, you don't know how many times I searched the web over the years for tiny bits of info on a possible return.
The reason Wetworks is so special is these characters are part of you and it is very important that you continue to pencil as many issues as possible. Keep up the good work and I will keep on buyin em. Thanks.
We finally have a review up of the first two issues on the comics radar podcast at:

Give it a listen if you get a chance.
I am loving the new Wetworks. Great story and great art. Thanks for all of your hard work. Cheers!
I just started with wetworks coz of my couzin. Its good and i even started collecting vol.1's and also started with vol.2. story is starting to get intersting and this cover art i have AMAZING! just hope like the other's say add Grail. Grail will be a big asset> like in x-men wolv. is the star player but also Dane is the captain something u can never leave w/o just like Capt. america. coz even w/o grail wetworks still works. just hope u guys do consider my suggestion. Keep up the good work!
Dear Mr. Portacio,
I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time out to sign my books especially my x-men and star wars.
Thank you again
Steven
Hey Whilce, it has been awhile sice you last posted. I hope all is well.
Whatever did happen to Grail? I thought he was supposed to be with Mother One? And the rest of the team? How come Dane didn't round them all up?
Great art, and nice to see your drawings again. Bawas-bawasan mo kasi ang pagkain ng leche flan para maayos ang diabetes mo. Hehehehe...
