Look Ma no Color...

For old fans this was one of the covers for the original series. It's never been seen like this in the original pencil state. The pencils were used just as a guideline for colorist Alex Sinclair to fully paint the cover. I believe this was the very first fully computer painted cover to be published. As requested by a fan here it is in its original form as pencils only.

This was my favorite comic book cover for ages. I'm not sure anything's surpassed it since it was originally published.

This might be a huge request, but... any chance of getting sort of a "director's commentary" track to go with the original three issued trade paperback of WetWorks?

It's probably far too time consuming, but, y'know, never hurts to ask!

MadPowerBomber,

If you mean put up a commentary of the original first three issues on the blog yes will definitely put it on the list...

If you mean to have it in the actual TPB that's a different story. It would be a good thing. I think all TPB's should have lots of extra stuff like that. All artist always have design sketches and all writers always have notes. The business model for most companies is that TPB's basically cost no money to print because the largest cost, paying the talent has already been taken care of when the original issues where completed. So to pay for extra stuff is an added cost. I look at it as the added cost is made up in a more complete and self-contained TPB and therefore hopefully a better sold TPB...

I remember this whilce. This is one more reason why I thought your style is so amazing. You have always been on the cutting edge with your appraoch to drawing comics.

It still takes my breath away, even in pencils. Thanks for the post. All time favorite!!!!!!

Yeah, definitely online. I figured it would be completely out of the question, especially in printed form. But it'd be fantastic to re-read those three issues (which I just revisited because of the relaunch and even went through with the girlfriend, haha) with some commentary and whatnot. I love commentary tracks on DVDs and whatnot, so this would be a massive plus for me.

I love that Classic Dane look...Dane is the best. BTW Whilce how strong does Dane's symbiote make him physically....is he physically stronger now than before???

Whilce Portacio said...

Dane is as strong as he ever was with the symbiote...what is new to him is his ability to control his psi-powers. He now knows he's always had them now he has them under his control.

Tho' like alot of psi-powered beings he is reluctantly to always used them for everything. His face mask and scars hint at why he doesn't like to use them.

Whilce,

I have been a fan of your's since the Legion of Night 2 parter about Fin Fang Foom. Your pencils have always impressed me with their slightly Asian flair and hyper techno/futuristic style. I never knew about your struggle with Diabeties. My brother and father have it as well and I can sympathize with what you are going through.

When you put the pencil sketches up of the old WW stuff, it made me think back to one of my favorite panels from the early series. I don't remember which specific WW issue it was, but it was one of the first times we see Waering in full Werewolf mode with Lupo out in the snow. The perspective is from slightly overhead and it's a full body shot of Waering in wolf form. It was also used for the Wildstorm card game as the werewolf image. At one point I wanted to get a tatoo of that pencil because it is by far my most favorite drawing you have ever done. You wouldn't happen to have that pencil sketch laying around to post would you? If you don't have that, could you post some sketches of any of the full werewolf designs that you used? I have always been a fan of werewolves and think that your's are among the best I have ever seen.

Again, thanks for brining back WW. I hadn't collected many comic books for several years, but when I read that you and Carey were teaming up for a new WW series I started my first comic subscription since high school (I'm 32 now, Ha!) Thanks!
